A WEB PRESENTATION FOR ORANG-ORANG SENANG IKAT. CURATOR: PETER TEN HOOPEN BROWSE COLLECTION STARTING AT: [001] [010] [020] [040] [060] [080] [100] [120] of antique and modern textiles Pusaka Gallery specialises in Ikat Art from Indonesia, bringing collectors some of the finest specimens from the archipelago. Our collection is modest in size - rarely exceeding 200 pieces - but quality is top rate. All of our older cloths are of museum quality; among them are some very rare pieces, with few other known specimens extant. The collection spans the entire archipelago, from Sumatra in the West till Timor in the East. We have chosen to present the collection island by island, but you may also browse around at random, using the access points above. For those unfamiliar with ikat, we recommend menu option 'What is ikat?'
Information on age, provenance, and type of yarn used are provided for each cloth. Extensive efforts have been made to provide correct descriptions: usually based on a combination of local information, desk research, consultation with Indonesian, European and US experts. References to literature have been given where cloths in our collection showed remarkable similarity, or to resolves issues of origin. Where uncertainties crop up (Indonesian textiles are notoriously hard to date, and in a few cases even hard to place) we indicate the margin of error. All are guaranteed to belong to the period indicated. This applies equally to our antique and semi-antique ikats, and to collectable contemporary pieces. Pusaka Gallery is not a business, but a private collection, built up over 25 years by purchases on the islands and from dealers and auction houses around the world. Occasionally, pieces are sold to provide funds for new purchases, where it is our aim to give as complete as possible a picture of the stylistic diversity and interwovennes between the islands.
