HIROSHIGE - VIEW OF SAKANOSHITA
Japan 1833 Woodblock print
Size: 22.5 x 34 cm
A woodblock print by Ando Hiroshige (1797-1858), number 49 from the beloved series "Fifty-Three Stations on the Tokaido". This series in not only outstanding as Ukiyo-e woodblock print but is also a supreme example of Japanese landscape art. In 1833 at the age of 37, Hiroshige issued these Fifty-Three Stations from the printing house of Hoeido. At this stage, the road leads up to a cave in which three Buddhas are seen. In the centre is the torrential river, with a succession of waterfalls, steep cliffs and scattered pine trees on either side. Hiroshige had a genius for creating a mood through such devices as placing human beings within landscape in such a manner that the viewer of the print is made to feel a kinship with nature. Excellent background information on this print is found in the work of Edward F. Strange, online at the Hiroshige Organisation.
